New London Hospital (NLH), a member of Dartmouth Health, is pleased to announce that its 98th Hospital Days event raised more than $185,000, while its 2024 Annual Benefit resulted in nearly $210,000 in donations—totaling approximately $400,000 in direct support for improved breast cancer screening, diagnosis and surgical-intervention technology.
This funded NLH’s recent purchase of equipment that will soon provide vacuum-assisted and stereotactic breast biopsies on-site, speeding the diagnosis process for both patients and providers. The success of the Annual Benefit also enabled NLH to acquire a radiography system, which provides quality images in real time during breast-conserving surgeries and stereotactic breast biopsies.
“I am truly excited about the recent acquisition of our new breast imaging and vacuum-assisted biopsy equipment, made possible by the incredible support from our community,” says NLH Director of Diagnostic Imaging Bonnie L. Smith. “This advancement is a significant step forward in enhancing breast health services at NLH, ensuring that our patients receive the highest quality care close to home and have access to the latest technologies that can improve their outcomes. It will also enable us to extend our capabilities to other system hospitals.”
Both events were held in August and offered opportunities for community members to celebrate, make memories and fundraise together to improve breast care at NLH. Gifts made to NLH during Hospital Days were matched dollar-for-dollar by The Burkehaven Family Foundation, which provided a $100,000 gift.
“On behalf of the providers, staff and patients of NLH, I offer our heartfelt gratitude to The Burkehaven Family Foundation and to our community for helping us significantly advance breast health in the communities we serve,” says Lauren Geddes Wirth, MD, NLH president and CEO. “It is humbling to have such dedicated support from our friends and neighbors as we work to fulfill our mission of delivering high-quality healthcare.”
Provider and staff training on the new equipment and technology is now underway.
