For Wilmot resident Kristen Gerry, recent heart-related issues were testing her limits both physically and emotionally. In 2023, when she arrived at New London Hospital’s (NLH) emergency department (ED), her struggles were addressed with compassion.

As part of the International DAISY Award®, which rewards and celebrates the skillful compassionate care nurses provide every day, Kristen shared her recent experience in her nomination of NLH ED Nurse Erin Aliotta.

“Erin was an exceptional and natural caregiver who made me feel comfortable,” said Gerry. “I had been to four different hospitals and in-and-out of the ER more than seven times in the last two months for heart-related issues, and met many compassionate caregivers in that time. Erin stood out as someone very relatable, and I really feel that caregiving is just an innate trait for her. She makes nursing seem effortless even though I know it is a very demanding field. Her calm and compassionate demeanor helped me so much when I was really scared and not feeling well.”

After reviewing several nominations, a special selection committee, including the NLH Patient and Family Advisory Council, chose Erin Aliotta, RN, for the award. In an emotional ceremony on Friday, February 23, 2024, Erin was presented the award with family, co-workers and Gerry in attendance.

In a humble gesture, Erin said the care she shared with Gerry “didn’t feel special” – but that’s exactly what makes her unique. She delivers compassion every day.
