Friends of New London Hospital May/June 2013
The Society for the Arts in Healthcare reports that
roughly half of US hospitals are using the arts to:
Support the well-being of patients, families and staff
Create a healing environment
Lower stress and anxiety
NLH is among this percentage providing an art program
that combines art, healing and wellness to improve life
and healthcare for patients, family, staff and community
members. The Friends of New London Hospital Art
Program Committee is actively working to ensure that
the arts remain a vibrant and vital part of the hospital’s
culture. The committee is currently comprised of four
community members who volunteer their time to ensure
the hospital is a warmer, more attractive and more
comfortable place by bringing the beauty and serenity
of art to its walls.
Having our local hospital care about enriching the
patient experience – beyond good medicine – is quite
wonderful, and being a part of the committee that
helps make that happen is a privilege,” says Janet Miller
Haines, one of the newer committee members.
Working in conjunction with Kathleen Kennedy, Manager
of the Annual Fund and Grants, who oversees the
day-to-day administration of the hospital’s art program,
the group meets bi-monthly to serve as the jury for
the rotating 16-week art exhibits and the permanent
collections that are contributed by generous donors.
The committee is dedicated to welcoming art that
supports a healing environment, adds attractiveness
and interest to the hospital, and also builds relationships
by extending support to the greater Lake Sunapee
Region art community.
When asked why she joined the committee, Laura Beth
Foster responded, “The dual purposes of enhancing
a patient’s visit to the hospital and supporting local
artists are my primary reasons for joining the art
committee. Learning more about the artists in the
Lake Sunapee Region has been a great benefit to me.
My surroundings have always been very important to
me, and I hope the patients who enter the hospital are
stimulated by the changing art exhibits.”
The Friends of New London Hospital Art Program
committee is grateful to all of our artists and donors
for generously contributing artwork to brighten the
halls of New London Hospital. The committee is often
looking for new artists and media to showcase.
Interested artists are invited to have their works
considered for possible inclusion in an upcoming
exhibit by contacting the Community Relations and
Development office at 603.526.5373.
