NEW HEALTH CENTER BUILDING OPENS IN NEWPORT

New London Hospital (NLH) opened the doors of its new Newport Health Center (NHC) facility to patients on October 17 at the corner of State Routes 11 and 103 and Elm Street in Newport, NH. This $9 million project replaces the next-door building that had housed the health center throughout its 25-year history. That vacated building will now be torn down to make room for covered drive-up/drop-off space outside the new facility and for expanded parking.

Donations to the project’s Building for Health capital campaign total $2.1 million to date, with another $100,000 remaining to be raised to reach the organization’s giving goal of $2.2 million.

Says NLH President and CEO Bruce King, “In 2009, we completed a renovation and expansion at our main campus in New London. Following that much needed accomplishment, it is now a second dream come true to provide this vastly improved and expanded modern medical space for our Newport Health Center patients and families. This new building will serve Newport and surrounding communities well for decades to come. We appreciate all those–businesses, foundations, organizations, individuals–that have financially supported this project, along with our staff and others whose work has made this possible.”

Established by NLH in 1991 following the 1989 closure of Newport Hospital, NHC offers primary care, pediatrics, women’s health, rehabilitation, orthopaedics and many secondary services. The new building’s design will support a team-based model of care. Being 75% larger, the new facility will allow for enhancement and addition of services, such as 3D mammography, diagnostic ultrasound and stress testing, for examples.

The new building is intended to promote wellness and help strengthen community connections in many ways. A Community Room will be used for free educational sessions offered by NHC and will be made available to various outside groups. Space for volunteers has been reserved in hopes of developing a smaller version of the very successful longstanding volunteer program at NLH’s main campus.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Tuesday, November 29 starting at 4:00 PM to celebrate the new Newport Health Center. All are welcome to attend this brief program which will be followed by tours and refreshments.
