NEW LONDON HOSPITAL REQUIRES FLU IMMUNIZATION FOR EMPLOYEES

New London Hospital has adopted a new policy that requires all employees, credentialed providers, volunteers and students to receive the flu immunization vaccine for the 2011 - 2012 flu season by December 31.

With a theme of "The Flu Ends With U," all employees were notified by letter that the new policy goes into effect immediately. Employees are eligible for medical or religious exemptions following the protocols outlined in the policy.

"This is a very effective preventive measure we can put into place quickly and efficiently to keep our patients safe," said Greg Curtis, MD, Chief Medical Officer. "Many healthcare studies have shown that unvaccinated healthcare workers increase the risk of patients of contracting the flu," Curtis continued. "We are hoping for a 100% immunization rate."

Studies also show that even an individual with a mild case of the flu can still transmit the flu to vulnerable patients with serious consequences. Immunized healthcare workers stay healthier, have better work attendance and are less likely to transmit the flu to their families.

The hospital will provide flu immunizations at no cost to all employees, credentialed providers, volunteers and students working at the hospital beginning in October.
