Beverly Goring and Rita James were honored at a surprise luncheon
given by 24 of the Friends Gift Shop Volunteers at Bistro Nouveau
in Eastman on May 20.
After eight years of “fun,” Beverly, Buyer and Manager of the Friends
Gift Shop, announced her retirement. “We are delighted that by the
end of 2013 our small shop (10’ by 12’) will have given $80,000 to New
London Hospital,” said Beverly. Staffed by a team of volunteer women
five days a week from 9 to 5, the shop is popular with sales of jewelry,
scarves, purses and small gifts. Beverly started her career as a buyer
with J.L. Hudson in Detroit, MI. Before moving to New Hampshire, she
was the store manager of Saks
Fifth Avenue stores across the
US and Bergdorf Goodman
in New York City.
Rita James, a resident of
Newport, NH, was employed
as a paralegal for 20 years. Her experience in retail sales began
when she helped a friend in a variety and antique store in Addison,
ME. As a volunteer at Maine Coast Hospital, Rita first worked in the ICU, then set up an office that ordered
pharmaceuticals for patients. Five years ago she and Beverly became friends and worked to make the Gift Shop
a very pleasant experience for patients, visitors and the hospital staff. Rita managed the Gift Shop and trained
the new volunteers. She assisted Beverly with the buying, especially plush animals, and helped prepare merchandise
for sales. Everyone is sad to see these wonderful women retire from the “Small Shop After All.”
