Each year a national organization reports on the status of philanthropic support of healthcare organizations
and hospitals. The 2011 report, published last October, shows that donors continue to regard healthcare as
one of the most important priorities in their annual giving.
Donors across the country who support their community hospital report a variety of reasons for doing
so. The most common reason is that the community hospital is valued as an important resource for the
community. Others report that a recent visit to their community hospital led them to make a gift. A few of
the latest New London Hospital statistics highlight the important role the hospital plays in the health of the
people we care for in our 15-community service area. During our fiscal year 2011 (October 2010 through
September 2011) NLH had:
More than 7,500 emergency department patient visits
More than 158,000 lab tests
Almost 2,000 patients that underwent surgical procedures
More than 24,600 radiology patient visits
More than 47,000 rehabilitation visits
Almost 77,300 provider appointments.
Some patients who seek and receive care at NLH are not covered by health insurance and cannot afford to
pay for that care. NLH is a nonprofit charitable organization and in keeping with that mission, we provided
$1,263,567 in unreimbursed care in fiscal year 2011.
Gifts to NLH’s annual fund last year allowed us to purchase critically important equipment for several
departments including the Medical/Surgical Unit, Respiratory Therapy, Surgical Services, Ambulance
Service, Pharmacy, Laboratory and Food and Nutrition. Additionally, annual fund gifts were used to help
offset unreimbursed care. Without these gifts – without YOUR support – our ability to serve our community
and continually improve upon patient care is dramatically affected.
Each fall we reach out and ask you to support our annual fund. If you value NLH as an important resource
for our community, please consider responding to our appeal using the enclosed envelope or making a gift
If you have any questions or comments about NLH’s annual fund and the impact it has on our
ability to achieve our mission, please do not hesitate to contact me at
