Mammography ProgramReceives Gift
Over a hundred golfers played at Lake Sunapee Country Club (LSCC) in support of the Sixth Annual LSCC Breast
Cancer Golf Tournament on June 26. The Lake Sunapee Women’s Golf Association hosts the tournament and donates
the proceeds to NLH’s Mammography Program. The Mammography Program provides financial support to area
women who otherwise cannot afford annual diagnostic testing and treatment.
The Lake Sunapee Women’s Golf Association had a goal to raise $20,000. At the end of the event, the overall total
was $19,399! Two extremely generous golfers donated $300 each in order to reach the goal. The $20,000 gift was
presented to NLH President and CEO Bruce King. “This gift represents a strong commitment to women’s health from
the Women’s Golf Association,” said King. “New London Hospital is very grateful to be the recipient of the proceeds
from this tournament.”
Led by Mag Francis of New London, the organizing committee held an auction and asked local businesses, friends
and family to participate in the tournament, sponsor a hole, or donate a raffle or auction item.
Wellness Initiative Takes Hold at NLH
As part of its commitment to the health of the community, NLH began with its own
employees. “If we are the caregivers, then we need to be the best caregivers we
can,” says Catherine Bardier, Senior Director of Human Resources. “In order for our
employees to do their job to the best of their ability, they need to take care of their
own health.”
WIN, Wellness Initiative Now, was started in 2009 by NLH employees committed to
promoting wellness and preventive health for all hospital staff. Over the next three
years, the initiative focused on creating a culture of health in the workplace and
providing programs that meet many individual needs.
The most encompassing action was the move to a tobacco-free campus, which involved a lengthy education
and promotion campaign. A sub-committee of smokers met often to advise the planning group on how best to
communicate with employees who would be affected by the implementation of the goal. NLH offered smoking
