Your Philanthropy at Work
By Julie DeGalan, Senior Director of Development
In my first few weeks at New London Hospital, I have
been struck by the gifts of time, talent, and treasure that
you bestowed upon the hospital during the fiscal year
that ended on September 30. And I am honored to have
the opportunity to thank you for your support. From the
volunteers who assist us in every aspect of our operation,
to the longstanding donors who have been giving to the
annual fund for over 25 years, to the supporters of the
Building Towards the Future capital campaign who made
a pledge payment or paid off a pledge, please accept
the heartfelt thanks of all of us at NLH – we would not be
able to offer our high quality or level of service without
the support you provide.
Because of the more than 750 loyal and generous
donors to the New London Hospital Annual Fund drive
that ended on September 30, almost $665,000 was
given in support of our mission to provide safe quality
care for every patient, every time, in partnership with
patients, families, and healthcare providers. These
donations allowed the hospital to aquire two pieces of
equipment that will dramatically enhance patient care: a
lab analyzer and a CT scanner.
Recently installed in Baker Memorial Lab, the lab
analyzer enhances the accuracy and efficiency of patient
lab testing. Using advanced technology, the analyzer
minimizes unnecessary repeats of blood sample draws
and helps ensure the right result the first time. It also
helps prevent contamination of samples. Baker Memorial
Lab will perform over 270,000 patient tests on this
analyzer each year.
The new state-of-the-art CT Scanner enhances patient
comfort while making detailed pictures of structures
inside the body. It produces higher quality images using
40% less radiation than earlier models. Results are also
available sooner. The hospital uses the CT for diagnostic
scans of a patient’s head, chest, abdomen and pelvis,
extremities and biopsies. We estimate that over 3,700
CT scans will be done at the hospital in the next year.
Thanks to your generosity, these machines, and
the clinical experts who operate them, will provide
safe quality care for our patients needing important
diagnostic tests.
In the new year, I look forward to meeting you and
personally thanking you for all that you do for New
London Hospital!
