monitors, and tubes going into my body. These
people were quick on their feet, while keeping a calm
attitude. I was scared, but I knew they were trying to
not let anything bad happen to me. They all introduced
themselves and quickly did what they needed to do.
“Does this hurt here? Follow my finger. Can you see all
right?” Questions and orders were being thrown around
faster than food in a food fight.
Until recently, it never occurred to me how close I was to
death. At the time I thought I was exhausted and wanted
to sleep, but I now understand that if I had gone to sleep
at home I might not have been able to live through this
life-changing experience.
When I left the hospital I knew I didn’t want to be a full-
time, self-centered snowboarder. A few months went by,
and someone asked me what I wanted to do for a living.
I told them “I want to work in health care; I want to save
lives and be the best that I can be.”
If the events that took place on that rainy day in
December hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have met the
people I did at New London Hospital. I wouldn’t be on
my way to making the best of my life by doing something
that makes others’ lives better. I love helping people and
caring is my passion thanks to those who saved my life
and gave me another chance.
Matt Humphrey is 16 years old and lives in Sunapee with
his mother, father, and two younger brothers. He enjoys
long boarding and basketball. He is a junior at Sunapee
High School. While still attending high school, Matt is
also participating in his second year of Health Science
Technology through the Sugar River Valley Technical
Program. He has enhanced his study program by taking
college-level Medical Terminology and Legal and Ethical
Issues in Health Care. He will have the opportunity to
become licensed as a licensed nursing assistant during
his senior year. His long-term plans are to obtain his RN
and APRN or PA-C.
