2013 Annual Report

Message from the Board Chair and the President

Our community access hospital is committed to safe quality care in a patient and family centered environment resulting in a healthier community. In our fiscal year 2013 we took several specific major steps in expanded support of that vision.

In January, we joined the Pioneer (more recently renamed "allwell") Medicare Accountable Care Organization (ACO) under the Dartmouth-Hitchcock umbrella. The ACO program is aimed at improving the experience of care, improving quality, and reducing cost for the Medicare patients we serve. To accomplish those goals, we are utilizing care coordination practices and programs that focus on patient outreach and education, preventive care services, and regular follow-up for targeted chronic disease programs.

In March, we convened a strategic committee comprised of representatives of various community groups to develop a plan for a Community Wellness Initiative, to be funded by a very generous anonymous 2012 gift to New London Hospital. We look forward to beginning implementation of this plan in 2014.

Throughout the year, we moved closer to completing our intended formal af?liation with Dartmouth-Hitchcock to create a more fully integrated health care delivery system that better serves the population health needs of our communities. Having been cleared in September by the State Attorney General’s office to move forward, we made this new relationship effective on October 1, 2013, the first day of our new fiscal year. Under the affiliation, we will over time integrate certain clinical, ?nancial and administrative activities with Dartmouth-Hitchcock, while retaining our status as a separate legal organization with our Board of Trustees and management.

Other 2013 accomplishments included receiving, for the second year running, the "Most Wired - Small and Rural" award from Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, the journal of the American Hospital Association and our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Steven Powell achieving the Certified Physician Executive designation, held by fewer than 2,000 physicians worldwide. We were also pleased to be included in the "narrow networks" of providers available to those using the State’s health insurance exchanges through Anthem and of providers in the Elevate Health program of Harvard Pilgrim Health Plan.

In addition to services for which we were reimbursed, we gave approximately $3.4 million in free or discounted services to those unable to pay for their care. Financially, we ended the year slightly in the black, thanks to investment income and generous donations from the community that together offset our small loss from operations.

Looking ahead, both the financial challenges and the opportunities for positive impact are great in a very rapidly changing healthcare environment. In the midst of these changes, we remain committed to our mission to provide safe quality care for every patient, every time in partnership with patients, families and healthcare providers.
