Like many of you, FY 2010 was a very challenging year economically for New London Hospital. While we did not achieve our budgeted goals and we sustained a loss from operations, we did address our challenges early on and made some necessary, yet difficult decisions. We can take pride in the fact that the operating decisions that were implemented significantly reduced the losses we might have faced.

Despite the stress inherent in healthcare today, New London Hospital never wavered from its commitment to take care of the health of our community. Each patient who sees a provider in New London or Newport, has blood drawn in the Baker Memorial Lab, regains strength and mobility in our rehabilitation department, joins us a resident in the Clough, or uses the Emergency Department is unique and provides us with an opportunity to demonstrate Patient and Family Centered Care.

We have many assets to call upon for our work in the coming year. Talented providers and a strong clinical staff continue to deliver primary and secondary care services. A knowledgeable Board of Trustees remains involved and stays current on the myriad of healthcare regulations and legislation. A resourceful administrative team supports the clinical and financial goals we have set. And, a generous community continues to make our hospital the beneficiary of their gifts.

Our future presents many challenges. Access to care for many will continue to demand patient financial assistance. We must seek ways to expand services in Newport. The implementation of an electronic health record will expand our ability to collect patient data and significantly enhance the quality of care. The ability to recruit and retain a well-qualified workforce must constantly be addressed.

We are fortunate that such a supportive community surrounds New London Hospital. With your continued interest and investment in the hospital, we know we can take advantage of these opportunities and continue to deliver quality patient care.
