New London Hospital has received a $700,000 gift from an anonymous donor. It is the largest noncapital gift the hospital has received in its 94-year history. The donor stipulated that these funds "be used for improving the health of the community and the patients served by the hospital." The gift enables the hospital to address the most pressing healthcare needs of the people in the 15 communities it serves.
"To say that the hospital is overwhelmed with the generosity of this gift is an understatement," said Bruce P. King, President & CEO. "Our Board of Trustees, physicians and employees realize that the significance of this gift goes far beyond the amount. It is a singular acknowledgment that our hospital provides quality patient care that is critical for the health of our community. We are immensely grateful for the trust this gift represents and for the new healthcare initiatives it makes possible."
A special committee of the hospital Board of Trustees was appointed to determine the most appropriate and impactful use of the gift to honor and fulfill the objective of the donor's gift.
"Our goal is to use this gift as the foundation for a significant, innovative and sustainable wellness initiative that will address the most pressing health concerns of our community," stated G. William Helm, Jr, Chair of the Board of Trustees. "We already have a clear and current understanding of the emerging healthcare needs of the community from the 2012 Community Health Needs Assessment and we intend to build our new project around those needs."
Hospitals are required to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment by the state every three years as part of the Community Benefit process required for nonprofit status. New London Hospital completed its assessment in April 2012. Click here to view the complete needs assessment.
