The Newport Health Center (NHC), a program of New London Hospital, is the recipient of a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development grant to purchase health information systems and medical equipment for patient care at the Newport Health Center. The USDA award is a 35% match to the $203,300 budgeted by New London Hospital for capital improvements at Newport Health Center.
The grant amount will allow the purchase of Health Information System (HIS) implementation equipment, such as computer tablets, data room network expansion and a document scanner. In addition, necessary medical equipment such as exam tables, an EKG machine, vital signs machines and an autoclave will be purchased.
"The ability to purchase HIS equipment allows NHC to fully implement an efficient electronic medical records system," said Susan Bryant, Senior Director, Community Relations at New London Hospital. "An electronic medical record allows the provider to store test results and prescribe medications. Also, the system provides improved billing accuracy for patient payments and patient care reimbursement."
The purchase of new medical equipment will enable NHC to replace equipment that no longer meets standards of quality care.
"The Newport Health Center has been a vital part of our community since 1991," said Daniel O'Neill, Newport Town Manager. "New London Hospital's efforts to continue to provide quality care for Newport area residents is valued and appreciated by the more than 68% of Newport residents who take advantage of its services.
"With ties to local transportation, schools, local businesses and numerous community organizations," O'Neill continued, "the Newport Health Center is fully integrated into the community as a resource for the well-being of the people who live and work in Sullivan County."
The Newport Health Center is a Rural Health Center opened by New London Hospital in 1991 to meet the local need for primary healthcare in Newport. Services are provided at 11 John Stark Highway, conveniently located in downtown Newport. The Center includes space for primary care for all ages, women's healthcare, behavioral health consultations, treatment rooms for minor surgical procedures, physical and occupational therapy, lab, EKG and hearing screening services, x-ray and mammography and nutrition counseling. NHC is open five days a week with extended hours on Mondays and Wednesdays for evening appointments.
