When a collaboration of Emergency Medical Service agencies results in the saving of a life, it is a testament to the commitment of the providers and their leaders. Recently, a critical situation had a positive outcome due to the collaborative efforts of Newport Dispatch, Newport Fire & EMS Service, New London Hospital Emergency Room, DHART (Dartmouth Hitchcock Advanced Response Team), and the DHMC Cath (Cardiac Catheterization) Lab.
When Newport Ambulance Service arrived at the scene of an “unknown” medical emergency, they found a patient in cardiac arrest. Through their efforts at the scene and enroute to New London Hospital, the patient arrived at the Emergency Room with a pulse. The patient was stabilized at New London Hospital and transferred by DHART to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Cath Lab. A system that allows for expedited transfer of critical cardiac patients was put into place with New London Hospital and Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital Cath Lab three years ago. The extraordinary efforts of all agencies involved allowed the patient to celebrate the holidays with family.
"The American Heart Association recognizes a Chain of Survival," said Pamela Drewniak, EMS Coordinator at NLH. "This refers to a tiered response which, when activated appropriately, offers the highest probability of a successful outcome. Everything worked perfectly in this situation. We are honored that our combined efforts helped to save this patient's life."
To applaud those who participated in the response, New London Hospital held a recognition event, attended by family, friends, department members and New London Hospital staff and Board of Trustee members.
Kathy Doolan, Field Supervisor of the NH Bureau of EMS, presented Bureau of EMS Tier Awards, which recognize the agencies involved in a Tier Response to a critical event. Tier awards were presented to Newport Dispatch, represented by Dustin Holmes; Newport Fire & EMS, represented by Fire Chief Wayne Conroy; New London Hospital Emergency Room, represented by Kent Wheeler, Director of Emergency Service; and DHART and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Cath Lab, represented by DHMC Cath Lab Manager, Don Guardagni.
American Heart Association Chain of Survival Certificates and CPR Save Pins were presented to pre hospital providers. Pins were presented to the Newport providers by Newport EMS Captain, Kenneth Carleton, EMT-P. Receiving pins were Newport Dispatcher Dustin Holmes; John Wilcox, EMT-I; Joe Attenhofer, EMT-I; Chris Marcotte, EMT-B; Brian Blunt, Firefighter; Corey Conroy, EMT -B; Bruce McDonald, Firefighter; and Tyler Nelson, Firefighter.
