Offering Quality Cancer Care, Close to HomeComfort and companionship may not be the qualities that readily come to mind when one is informed that chemotherapy is necessary to treat a medical condition. However, these are precisely the qualities that guided the development of New London Hospital’s new Oncology/Infusion Suite. “We understand that patients who have cancer face many challenges,” said Melissa Nelson, RN. “By offering this specialized care in New London, we’re preventing the need to travel long distances. And by creating an environment that’s comfortable and friendly, we hope to lessen the burden of the challenges patients face.” The Oncology Infusion Service is located on the first floor of the new addition to New London Hospital. Patients will find high-back leather-like recliners, a naturally lighted room, flat screen TVs, DVD players and Internet connections. In addition, a healing garden is planned for outside the window that patients face. Patients may choose to receive their treatments in a private setting, or they may take advantage of opportunities to develop friendships with others undergoing treatment. In addition to chemotherapy, other services offered by the Oncology Infusion Service include transfusions, outpatient antibiotics, IV fluids, IV medications for iron deficiency, rheumatoid arthritis, neuromuscular disorders, and osteoporosis. Services are provided by a specialized medical and nursing team. New London Hospital’s oncology program is part of the Regional Cancer Program of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC). Dartmouth oncologist Marc Gautier, MD treats patients and provides consultation. Elizabeth Kimtis, RN, MS, ARNP, a DHMC Nurse Practitioner, works with Dr. Gautier. The goal of the Specialty Services Unit at NLH is to provide quality care by experienced professionals in a comfortable and caring environment. Dr. Marc Gautier is affiliated with the Regional Cancer Program of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He sees patients in New London Hospital’s Specialty Services Unit. He is certified by the American Boards of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine.
